Straubing

Let yourself be enchanted by the atmosphere of the old duke's town alongside the river Donube, indulge into the relaxing Bavarian sense of life and find yourself on the search of the centuries-old history of Straubing.

Bogen and Bogenberg

There is a way of the cross from the picturesque center to the so-called Bogenberg – 120 meters (appr. 394 feet) above the Dunube – with extended ramparts. The pilgrimmage church, the oldest Maria pilgrimmage church in Bavaria, has been a destination fora religious procession on Pentecost Sunday for 500 years. A candle with a height of 13 meters (42,65 feet) has been carried – in an upright position – to the church at this event.

ROUNDTRIP THOUGH THE BAVARIAN FOREST ALONG THE GLASS ROAD

The first stop is in Bad Kötzting at the „Bärwurzerei Liebl“ (destillery). The town Bad Kötzting is worth seeing because of its ancient houses in the historic old town and the narrow alleys which are located around the castle.

TRIP THROUGH THE BAVARIAN FOREST NATIONAL PARK BAVARIAN FOREST

National parks are expected to maintain the natural heritage. The border area between Rachel and Reschbachtal were put under special protection for preservation of flora and fauna on October 7th, 1970. Of course, economic forest is supposed to be developed in a natural way.

HOUSE OF WILDERNESS

There is not only a virgin forest in countries far away but also here in Bavaria – the national park „Bavarian forest“. You can get a lot of information at the new visitor center of the national park „Haus der Wildnis“ (house of wilderness) in Ludwigsthal.

MUSUEM VILLAGE TITTLING

The impressive exhibition in Tittling shows in a complex of a village different forest houses, farmsteads and more than 120 individual objects like mills, saws, handicraft businesses and the oldest elementary school in Germany from 1670.

VIECHTACH AM PFAHL

It was possibly a ford site above the so-called river „Schwarzer Regen“ which led to the first settlement of Viechtach in the third millenium before Christ. First documentary mention can be found in 1104 – as a gift which already was made in 1080.

GLASSY BARN NEARBY VIECHTACH

This is the lifework of glass painter Rudolf Schmid – a famous glass wall about the life of the legendary robber Heigl who also became famous for his prophecies.

Cham

We do a tour through the town and look at its best parts. Among other sites, the „Marktbrunnen“ (fountain) at the market place created by the artist Neustifter, the churches, the townhall and the landmark of the town, the „Chamer Biertor“ (beer gateway), belongs the sights of Cham.

Furth im Wald - Drachenstich

We reach the border town Furth im Wald. There the very well-known „Further Drachenstich“ (stabbing of the dragon) is performed in August every year. It is the oldest folk play in Germany. Furth is located only a few miles to the border to the Czech Republic.

Aldersbach

The former monastery church of the „Zisterzienser Abbey“ Aldersbach was founded in 1146 and is located nearby the eponymous market town which more than 1000 years old. It is a Lower Bavarian gem where also one of the oldest breweries is situated.

Passau

Picturesque alleys lead from the cathedral square, the highest point of the old town, to the north and south to the river Dunube or the river Inn. We can find houses with archways, wonderful staircases and light-flooded patios.

Regensburg

The old town ensemble of Regensburg has been UNESCO world heritage since July 13th, 2006. It is the only maintained medieval city in Germany.

Walhalla

You have to ascend 354 steps to the olymp of the „German intellectual heroes“ above the Dunube. King Ludwig I. constructed the hall of fame. He had found the right location for this pantheon on a hill at Donaustauf while paying a visit to Prince Thurn and Taxis.

Weltenburg

Great attractions at the smallest space: The oldest Bavarian monastery with its famous Asam church is located in the district (population of 400) of Kehlheim. It offers a breathtaking natural adventure – the so-called „Donaudurchbruch“ (breach of the Dunube).

Kelheim - HALL OF LIBERATION

King Ludwig I commissioned the hall of liberation on Michelsberg. The construction was begun by Leo von Klenze in 1842. It is a monumental, classicistic rotunda.

Landshut

Landshut with more than 500000 inhabitants is the capital of the administrative region Lower Bavaria and is located alongside the river Isar. Landshut was founded in 1204 and has been overtopped by the Castle Trausnitz. The old town on the right side of the Isar is influenced by a medieval character.

Castle Egg is a romantic medieval castle with a beautiful park (today a castle hotel). This typical castle complex with a moat, drawbridge, gate tower, chapel and oubliette can be visited from April to October.

MONASTERY METTEN

Monastery Metten is one of the oldest Benedictine abbeys in Bavaria. It was founded around 770. „Karl der Große“ (Charles the Great) conferred protection of the king and immunity to the abbey.

JOURNEY IN THE WINE COUNTRY – WACHAU

Austria's – probably – loveliest river landscape – the Wachau. It emerged 30 million years ago, is 32 kilometers (appr. 20 miles) long, starts shortly behind Melk and ends shortly before Krems.
